The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the mountains are calling. Spring is finally here, which means our favorite trails and hillsides are bursting with the country’s most captivating wildflowers.
From the East Coast’s famous cherry blossoms in Washington, DC, to the Pacific Northwest’s tulips and alpine blooms, and down to Texas’s iconic bluebonnets, the U.S. is full of vibrant spring color. The Southwest, including California’s deserts, also comes alive with poppies and other wildflowers that paint the landscape.
Here are some of the best spots to get your wildflower fix this season:

Mount Rainier National Park, WA
Home to the active volcano and spectacular alpine meadows, Paradise Meadow offers bog orchids, bleeding hearts, bellflowers, and hundreds of other wildflower species. Bloom periods vary, so whether you visit early or late in the season, you’re in for a colorful treat. July is peak bloom for violets, lupines, paintbrush, daisies, and glacier lilies. Stay updated with weekly bloom reports on the Mount Rainier National Park website.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA
While this year’s “superbloom” might not be happening, Anza-Borrego still hosts stunning native plants like evening primrose, sand verbena, parish poppies, and desert sunflowers. Big Bend National Park, TX
For natural displays of Texas bluebonnets and lupines, Big Bend is a fantastic choice. Early spring’s cooler temps set the stage for colorful roadsides and foothills. Keep in mind the bloom timing can shift, with purple-blue shades giving way to yellows by May. Check Hill Country Portal for up-to-date bloom schedules.

Shenandoah National Park, VA
Mountain laurel blossoms paint the park’s mountainsides in whites and deep pinks from late May through June. Alongside these, vibrant trillium and columbine add to the show. Trails like the Limberlost Trail in the Central District offer easy access to these blooms, with plenty of spots to pause and soak in the scenery. Even Skyline Drive boasts flower-lined roadsides. The National Parks Service site is a great resource for seasonal highlights.

Picacho Peak State Park, AZ
Arizona surprises with colorful desert blooms, like the fiery golden-orange Arizona poppy. Picacho Peak State Park, located between Tucson and Phoenix, offers campgrounds and trails to enjoy the vibrant desert flowers firsthand. It’s an ideal spot for a springtime desert adventure.
